Olson's passage

"Collective action refers to combined efforts pursuing goals, obviously, political action is collective actions. Olson argues you can separate "diffuse interests," the majority, from "concentrated interests," minority interests. "

This passage means by working together we can achieve our goals. It may be better to split it up between the majority and minority, depending on the goal and who it affects. By breaking into smaller factions you may be more effective towards your goal.

I  chose this passage because I can relate concentrated interest to the grant that I work under. I work as a Community Health Worker at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, I work with the Hepatitis B patients under the check Hep B Grant. As I work with this population it gives me an opportunity to be on different committees trying to reach populations affected by this virus. On these committees we discuss ways of finding funding for promotional materials, vaccinations and raising awareness. Through combined efforts we are getting people the treatment they need through different organizations throughout the city.

There is another grant like this for Hepatitis C. Although we work with the people who also are on the sister Grant, we don't work under the same Grant. If we did Hepatitis B would get smothered out. The main focus would be hepatitis C because that's what is more known in the United States and the population it affects. Hepatitis b effects the more of the foreign born population, it doesn't affect mainstream Americans.
